Sticker Movie: NYC Premiere Jan. 12-14 in BK

Sticker culture, a 21st Century global art phenomenon like none other, has come to the big screen.

Sticker Movie, a joyous celebration of graffiti’s latest spawn, has its East Coast premier Jan. 12-14 at BK Art Haus, 24 Marcy Ave., Brooklyn. And to celebrate, an art show featuring work by top names from the world of graffiti and street art will be held during all showings.

The show will feature work by Chriss RWK, Shepard Fairey, Cornbread, Cost, Kest Gak, El Toro, Drew One, Sheposse, Jim Tozzi, Buy It, Toastoro, City Kitty, Turtlecaps, Cheer Up and Jesse Warner.

The movie – written and produced by Harlem’s Sha-Risse Smith and fellow New Yorker Tori Luecking and directed by Emmy winner Will Deloney – examines the growth of sticker culture and its place in the art world.

The film was created by sticker people, stitching together colorful patchworks of stories told by the artists, photographers, and collectors who shape this latter day subculture of the graffiti underground.

The movie looks at sticker culture across 23 countries and examines the work of more than 80 artists, including some of the street art world’s biggest names, including Shepard Fairey, Chris RWK, Niceo CM, and Fasermacka.

“My method of getting out with stickers is just never leave the house without them…ever,” says Fairey at one point in the movie as he pulls a handful of Obey stickers from the right front pocket of his jeans.

“That Freudian dream of going to school and then looking down and saying ‘Oh, I forgot to put pants on.’ That level of panic is the way I feel if I get out of the house and I don’t have stickers,” he added.

The movie focuses in no small way on New York, the birthplace and epicenter of sticker culture. Here in Gotham artists tag virtually every available surface with their branded, gluey glyphs, the sidewalks to the skyscrapers, the fire hydrants to the sign posts, the streets to the suites.

"There is no place like New York City,” said Smith. “Bringing Sticker Movie to my hometown fills me with indescribable joy and gratitude. I am a New Yorker to the core, my family has lived here for five generations,” she added.

"Screening Sticker Movie is not just a cinematic experience; it's a celebration of the diverse voices that shape the cultural collage of our international sticker community. And there is arguably no other city on the planet that has more style, and visual appeal for sticker heads than NYC. This is going to be EPIC," Deloney added.

During an interview with T.K. Mills of UP Magazine earlier this year, Deloney called the project “a celebration of sticker culture worldwide.”

“Through street art, zines, shows, and street photography, people of all ages and backgrounds have come together to form an international sticker community. This self-regulated network of enthusiasts create, trade, collect, and display stickers outdoors for all to see. Sticker people are the heart of this subculture, and Sticker Movie is their legacy,” he added.

Produced by Emmy-winning creative studio Pixelated Ideas, Sticker Movie is a winner of the AXS Film Fund. Ricky de Laveaga and Alicia Parrott co-produce, with Stacey Governale-Bloom heading Press Relations. Danielle Benedict and Jake Casey lead worldwide sales on behalf of The Dazey Phase.
