“RIDING THE GAIN” at 17 FROST

Riding the Gain, a new show opening on March 10, 7-10 PM, at 17 Frost Gallery in Williamsburg, features paintings, photographs, and sculpture by 12 known and unknown artists pushing their limits and turning up the “volume.”

Google Search: “Riding The Gain is an electronic amplification of the video signal. This means that the signal is boosted electronically, adding more voltage to the pixels on your imager.”

For Riding the Gain, each artist was asked to go BIG! The show will reveal how far the artists were willing to go to satisfy that mandate.

One highlight of the show is the street photography of Jessica Bard. She is best known as one of the first female New York City downtown skaters as well as one of the photographers of early 1980’s skateboarding.

For many, the skate scene didn't start until 1990 so much of Jessica's 1980's work remains largely under-the-radar. (For example, Jessica was not mentioned in a recent NYTimes article about The Brooklyn Banks by reporter Winnie Hu).

However, Jessica's work has been published in photo-heavy tome," Full Bleed" a compilation by A. Beebs, A. Coporan & Jessica Bard. Serra showcasing the early years of Skateboarding in NYC and in the documentary film by Nichols & Charny "From Deathbowl to Downtown: The Evolution of Skateboard in NYC".

DR. REVOLT, another contributor to the show, was Born and raised in New York City, with graffiti roots in the early 70’s, REVOLT is an original member of the historic NYC subway graffiti crew, The Rolling Thunder Writers (RTW).

Known for his ultra-colorful tags and elaborate pieces on the Broadway #1 line, with heavily influenced psychedelic and comic art stylings. Later, he took his work “all-city”.

REVOLT contributed to the seminal classic hip-hop films “Wild Style and “Style Wars,” and participated in the 80’s East Village art gallery scene, various music videos and album covers, animation, comics, vinyl toy design, and creating the classic “YO! MTV Raps” logo.

Other artists featured in Riding the Gain include Alex Itin, Adrian Bermeo, GreatBoxers, Javier Hernandez-Miyares, Andrew Stys, Al Diaz, Joseph O’Neal, Netism, KOOK, Rene Le Rude, ANNA!
