NYC Spring Art Season: What You Need to Know

Does it seem like the spring art show season starts earlier and earlier every year? It sure does to us. Here we are in mid-March, spring a dim light in the future, but only a couple weeks until the first openings.

The big one, Frieze, and the fairs that have sprung up around it, is still a couple months away in mid-May, but tickets to most of the Frieze week events are available now. It usually sells out, so it’s never too early to grab early-bird tickets. As usual, B Scene Zine will be bringing you coverage of all the NYC spring art goodness.

Here’s a first look at what you need to know:

The Photography Show, the annual Association of International Photography Art Dealers show featuring work from across the photography universe, all styles, all eras, starts with a VIP opening on March 30 from noon-8 PM at Center415, 415 5th Ave. After that, it’s open to the public March 30-April 1, noon-7 PM, and April 2, noon-5 PM.

Art Expo New York is also getting an early jump on the season, with a VIP opening March 30, 4 PM at Pier 36 in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. After that, it’s open to the public March 30-April 1, noon-7 PM, and April 2, noon-5 PM.

Independent Art Fair gets a headstart on Frieze week, with a VIP opening at Spring Studios, 6 St Johns Lane, May 11, 10 AM-8PM. It’s open to the public May 12-13, 11 AM-8PM and May 14, 11 AM-6 PM.

Frieze, the leading international art fair that launched in 2012, returns to The Shed at Hudson yards with a VIP opening May 17, 11 AM-7 PM. It’s open to the public May 18-20, 11 AM-7 PM., and May 21, 11 AM-5 PM.

NADA New York kicks off with a VIP opening at 548 W. 22nd St., May 18 at 2 PM. It runs through May 21, times aren’t yet available, but they will likely be similar to the other Frieze week shows, they were last year.

Volta New York, in its 25 year, has slated its VIP opening for May 17 from 5-7 PM, but, good news, it opens to the public that day from 7-9 PM. It’s open May 18-20, noon-8 PM and May 21, noon-5 PM.

Focus Art Fair New York is set to run  at Chelsea Industrial, 535-549 W 28th St, in Chelsea, from May 18-21, but times were not available. We’ll update as soon as they are made available.
