At 14BC Gallery: A Gothic Look at Feminity

Daughters of Darkness, Daughters of Memory, Daughters of Light, a disquieting gothic look at femininity, opens Friday, March 15, at 14BC Gallery, the upstart 14th St. space that is breathing new life into the EV art scene.

A group show curated by filmmaker-installation artist Alexis Karl, Daughters of Darkness, Daughters of Memory, Daughters of Light features work that seeks to unveil codes and symbols composed of light, shadow, metal, fabric, paint, wood, thread, glass, sound and aroma.

The exhibition includes the work of artists Lara Allen, Deniz Ataman, Katalina Bererra, Ilayda Celik, Shine Dai, Esme Eldridge, Renae Govinda, Claire Hansen, Alexis Karl, Audrey Latouch, Kristen Leonard, Lisa Moley, Katya Moskalyuk, Veronique Roblin, Kymmie Sachs, Jennie Shen, Dina Shirin and Virginia Wagner.

Presented as hieroglyphs of a brilliant feminine history, the work in the all women exhibition peers into the shadow realms of feminine archetypes- to reveal those lost in the half light of memory, to conjure the sensuality of the physical form, and to celebrate the power, danger, joy and beauty of being a woman,

The gallery says Daughter of Darkness, Daughter of Memory, Daughter of Light revels in the transformational stages of womanhood: the child, the woman and the crone, and celebrate the particular sorcery of a collective sisterhood.

14BC Gallery was opened last fall by artists Ken Weaver, Jim Fealy, Jon McKenzie and Walter-Salas Humara who lives in the building and tours with his band The Silos.

“Our goal at 14BC is to reach out to a wide variety of artists, from those who are just beginning to exhibit, to artists in their mid- to late careers,” Weaver said.

“In addition to art exhibitions, we also envision a multi disciplinary program, and will endeavor to bring performance, music and readings to our space to share with everyone in the community,” he added.

The show opens March 15 with a reception from 5-9 PM which will include a live performance by artist Renea Govinda at 8 PM. Daughter of Darkness, Daughter of Memory, Daughter of Light is showing March 16th, 3-7 PM, March 21-23rd 3-7 PM at 14BC Gallery, 626 East 14th Street NYC between Ave B and C.
