The Anarchists Are Giving Away Food
What is anarchy? Who are the anarchists and what do they stand for? The Oxford dictionary describes anarchy as “a state of disorder due to absence or nonrecognition of authority; absence of government and absolute freedom of the individual, regarded as a political ideal.”
Unfortunately, anarchy holds such a negative connotation that it may often be misunderstood. At its core definition, one could say that America itself was founded by a group of anarchists. The anarchists believe it's too late to save our current system, and it should be dismantled and NOT rebuilt. In the absence of leadership, historically, chaos ensues, but civil unrest and chaos are never a solution to any problem. Many believe the current society we live in now, with rampant poverty, social disparities and political polarization, is the chaos.
A group of anarchists, representing a larger organization formally known as the NYC Metropolitan Anarchists Coordinating Council, were out on Ave B the other day giving away home cooked meals. Heavy metal skipped from small speakers as some passersby stopped for a plate and to share a conversation. Those that stopped by shared fellowship along with mac and cheese, tempe and sweet potatoes. There was no need to worry about dietary restrictions, as the food was all freshly cooked that day (and vegan, except the mac and cheese).
B Scene Zine picked up some tidbits of tantalizing conversation as the food was distributed:
“The red stuff is the best, that’s where the flavor is”
“You know this is happening, you want to fight it but you don’t know if there’s an organization for that.”
“Anarchy is for everyone”
“What inspired you?” “The world and suffering - no leaders.”
“What is the true meaning of mutual aid?”
“This is for the individual.”
“What inspired you to join the anarchists?” “Just coming and hanging out is radical.”
