A Very Open Call
In a Dada move that would make Marcel Duchamp himself proud, O’Flaherty’s Gallery, 55 Ave C, burnished its cred as the neighborhood’s singularly authentic avant garde art headquarters by issuing an open call that is actually open.
In what is certainly a first for an art gallery in the East Village, or anywhere in today’s art world for that matter, the months old gallery called on artists, and that pretty much includes everyone, to show up with one work of art, and that pretty means anything. The reward: Your work will hang on the wall for almost a month in an East Village art gallery. That mad typing sound you’re hearing right about now is the sound of hundreds of artist resumes being updated.
Within days, hundreds of pieces of art were stacked floor to ceiling ready to be hung for the show, which opens July 9 and runs until sometime around the end of the month. We suspect there will be more selfies posted to social media by artists from this show than from any other.
The gallery is run by the shamelessly artist Jamian Juliano-Villani with fellow-artist Billy Grant and musician Ruby Zarsky. The idea of a truly open call is unheard of, particularly in a neighborhood with a surfeit of artists and a dearth of gallery space.
“We will take any art as long as it's under 36" inches. No wet oil paint. Seriously. No need to send submissions, we will gladly accept your art, ONE piece per person,” the trio said in an Instagram Post announcing the event.
Apparently, they felt the rules were simple enough. They added at the end of one post: “DONT DM ME ASKING THE SAME GODDAMN SHIT I JUST CLARIFIED!!!! Sincerely, O'Flaherty's (Jamian and Billy)”
